I’m an information scientist with a background in human-centered multimedia and currently working as an e-commerce stylist. For my bachelor thesis I did a conceptual design for a wearable system for musicians on the road and for my master I did research on textile parameters. In my free time I like to gain more practical experience through workshops as this was missing during my studies and follow lectures to remain knoknowledgeable on the relevant topics.

YOUR FAILED PROJECT


The project was carried out as part of my graduation thesis at the University of Amsterdam. I studied information science of which wearables is one example of an information system. Since this research was carried out from an academic point of view the focus was more on functionality than design. The reason for examining the potential of wearables was to look for alternative approaches of interactive information systems. To step away from the desktop, laptop and mobile applications.


At the beginning of the project this was not the intent. Halfway through the project my supervisor saw the potential for submitting it to an HCI workshop and later on also to enter the HCI video competition. Unfortunately I could not attend neither two events, but was represented by my supervisor at the HCI workshop.


I was inspired by my immediate surroundings. As most of my friends are musicians and living in the Netherlands and always travelling with the train and their music gear, I wondered how they would capture the very beginning of a song, the inspirational stage. A musical idea can strike at any time, but it might not be very convenient to take out all the gear and make a recording. Therefore I decided to look at the potential of wearables since a garment is something we always have on us.


I proposed a wearable support system for musicians on the move, called Boogynoma, to solve this problem. First I looked at the current situations of musicians on the move to come up with a design solution. Subsequently a pre-study analysis was carried out to define the requirements for the functionalities of the wearable support system. As such a design for the system was carried out. This consisted of a mock up prototype of the wearable music shirt and an interactive belt.

The project failed in the sense that it is merely a conceptual depiction of how the system should work in reality. It was an attempt to illustrate the potential of this wearable system if it would be fully functional. Reasons for failure were time constraints and no budget available at that time for such projects.


After my graduation the project came to a definite end. For my master’s project I could have continued with this project and make an actual working system, but again I bumped into budget restraints and decided to do some research in fashion technology and textile parameters.


It gave me a lot to think about, especially all the aspects you have to take into account when designing on the body and the interactions that go with it. It also gave me a push to keep doing research in my free time and stay informed on the newest developments in the wearables field. I feel I still miss relevant design and programming skills when it comes to join projects, since I’m not exactly a fashion designer or a programmer. In order to succeed one must also have hands-on experience.

 

ON E-TEXTILES


I like the fact that it can serve as a wearable information system, which is pushing human interaction out of the box. It also provides instant access and results as it is worn close to the body. It also supports the idea of pervasive computing that technology is always with you or around you.


It is interesting as there are versatile fields of application, for example fashion, sports, entertainment and healthcare. This means that we all have to work together to achieve tangible results and allows for interdisciplinarity.


As technology is fast-paced and computer parts are getting smaller research should be carried out on new materials, reactive materials and the integration of sensors into clothing. Therefore not only stitch on a sensor or a LED on a fabric, but actually make the garment reactive by incorporating technology in the fibers.

After working for a famous Fashion Haute Couture business and as a producer for a major publishig house in Brazil she moved on to new challenges. She received a DAAD scholarship to attend a MFA in Media, Art &Design at the Bauhaus Universität Weimar, Germany. YOUR FAILED PROJECT


The project was developed for the Interface Design course during the MFA. in Media Arts and Design at the Bauhaus University.

With a background in Fashion Design, I wanted to test the limits of the textiles in combination with electronics, which was something new that I was learning.


My goal was to develop a streetwear MIDI board T-shirt. The main goal is that one can wear it as regular t-shirt but activates it whenever attaches the hardware part to the t-shirt through magnetic connection.


technical failure


The ink on the t-shirt is very responsive, however, the hardware box was placed in the chest and it was too heavy to hold in the t-shirt. The consequence is that in a live performance made during the exhibition organized by the University (Summaery 2016), the t-shirt failed big time. Whenever I made some movement, the hardware box would disconnect from the t-shirt. Also, the design of the pattern wasn’t helping because it was small.


I worked harder to get the prototype to the second level. The pattern was changed and the hardware shrinked, but now using buttons instead of magnets.


Positively, it was good to iterate, understanding the strengths, weakness and the level of reliability of the prototype.

 

ON E-TEXTILES


I have a strong connection with textiles since a child. At the age of 10 I could embroider, tricot and make crochet. Such connection lead me to study fashion design. Now, I mainly make art out of textiles and part of this learning curve/fun is to play with electronics.


Considering the clothes as the human second skin, the textile is the material that are always in contact with the human body. When it come to capture human data, it is the material less obtrusive to the body. I believe that textiles can support advances in health care and sport performance enhancement.


Electronic features should be seamlessly integrated to the textile surface instead of being attached to it.

“I am very happy, I hope you are too” is a residency piece relates to community collaboration and also my own art practice, it is a mixture of craftsmanship and e-textile. This project was a residency work, then the result and technique became part of a workshop work with local Aztec people, the workshop was host by a local company Bandui Lab who make wooden action figures base on Aztec tradition folks, it is a fair trade frame a like program.


I was fascinated by conductive threads by that time and keen to make a piece by it, I was interested in designing e-embroidery application, something can be part of the garment aesthetic and with electric function too, it is wearable and interactive. I was just excited by its possibilities, I didn’t have any specific goal for the solution, I just experiment with the materials.

technical failure


The FPC interposer is a bad idea, firstly its the soldering, as long as theres soldering part in your flexible design, it breaks all the time. Second, it is the connection within the FPC breaks too, FPC is simply not made for application with many bending requirement. The other thing is the embroidery method is slow to produce, although it is a good medium to work with Aztec without engineer or circuit design knowledge.


I didn’t successfully improve the piece itself afterwards, instead i put lots of time to study alternative ways to make flexible solutions for electric circuit boards, there were some solutions from flexible circuit companies like Stretchable Circuit, but I didn’t have sufficient budget for those commercial solutions.


I realize it is difficult to become a self supported prototyper or e-textile designer without budget and solutions, I did learned a lot from reading papers, emails from e-textile companies, research groups, that opens my vision for industrial solutions but also it’s in vain since it is high cost solution for individuals. It also stopped my art approach after spending 2-3 years only looking for looking for technical solutions.

 

ON E-TEXTILES


Although after some years of technical frustration, the interesting parts still remain like using e-textile as social media and community tools for hosting workshop with e-texitler and traditional craftsmanship. Also through flexible material research, it open my mind for chemical process and bio materials, I now am looking into traditional photography chemical process and combine it with smart materials to make e-textile wearable prototype at home.


It is not interesting yet, at least the commercial e-textile application is still very limited as I know, either by technical reason or constrained by user experience.


If you are talking about commercial application, a successful product should fit in costumers user experience, textile application is very fixed like keeping warm and decoration, any application beyond it will go fail. The battery is a problem, so all electrical function should be passive triggered, means all application without improving traditional power source will definitely go fail.

YOUR FAILED PROJECT


The project was developed in the context of academic research.


Research: The project was purposely created as a design toolkit to be included in a hands-on research workshop about pelvic fitness in women.


This project explored wearable e-textiles as i) a new creative set of materials and tangible medium to learn about human anatomy and physiology; ii) as embodied intimate learning experience.


The project consisted of two sets of materials for the activities of body mapping and DIY wearable e-textiles. This toolkit invited for on-body interactions and served as catalyst for conversations aimed at breaking the taboo on the topic.

This project was an attempt to explore smart, wearable materials as method to research intimate health and wellbeing. While the concept was successful and a series of workshops were facilitated the e-textile component was a peripheral device that, if today, I would have given more consideration to, as the e-textile was underdeveloped. Exploring different textile technologies and techniques could have led to a more intricate working prototype.


As planned, the project lived through a total of four workshops with women and girls. It held a significant place within my overall PhD research and currently it is the backbone of a future project, The Bitness Project: a creative DIY toolkit for women and girls to learn about their intimate health.


The project consolidated the design requirements for exploring body literacy and intimate care in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). The e-textile toolkit was delivered through a series of design workshops that revealed qualities of body knowledge to be affected by topics of taboo, misinformation, and lack of self-awareness. Ultimately, these findings helped designing the next stage of the research, which led to explore augmented textiles.

 

ON E-TEXTILES


I am interested in exploring perspectives on design interactions by pioneering innovative approaches in smart textiles as material for health and wellbeing; possibilities for wearables to encourage healthier lifestyles. Furthermore, I am passionate about designing innovative methods that challenge traditional modes of learning and sharing knowledge through and with textile/soft technology.


E-textiles open new avenues to understanding how reconfiguring traditional notions of textile and disciplinary boundaries can contribute to, e.g. positive wellbeing and generate social impact. Approaches as such necessitate cross-disciplinary dialogue, and engaging for example design, ethics, philosophy, biomedical technology, and synthetic biology. The later can contribute to shape and strengthen knowledge, as part of the design intention and outcome.


Human-centered design approaches that bring together and strengthen cross-disciplinary dialogue and, as consequence, design/scientific outcomes.

YOUR FAILED PROJECT:


Feel Me and Flutter / Stutter performance experiments and garments using DIY and off-the-shelf wearable tech, soft circuits/e-textiles that we augmented and hacked to make our own.


This project was both part of a choreographic practice as a practice-as-research platform. By making artistic work with wearables, we aim to explore what they might mean in a larger context – technically, philosophically and ethically.


As artists we question how bio-sensing and bio data demonstrates who we are as individuals, through movement, through our physiology? How does this unique individual data signature created through wearable technology relate to one’s performance expressivity and movement interaction? How can we explore these issues while enabling people access to their own data to interact with, and communicate with each, especially in performance contexts?


Hacking the Body develops methods of making using wearable sensing devices to access physiological data to create unique interactive performances. This project develops bespoke embedded sensing and actuation systems within costumes, to create various public performances, which explore how dancers interpret physical interactions triggered by devices on their bodies as a means of nonverbal communication and movement creation.


Prototyping


While in the prototyping phase of the project, we had many failures ranging from batteries exploding to awkward placement of sensors on the body. We learned that dancers are very specific users for wearables and really put our devices through their paces in terms of extreme testing of electronics and movement.


The project was developed into two separate dance pieces with two different approaches to wearable systems with haptic feedback. Flutter/Shutter was developed using DIY techniques to be more delicate and free in terms of movement. Feel Me was developed using more commercial productions that were hacked to effect more traditional choreography. Both pieces toured the UK.


We needed to fail in order to really see where we could push these devices and how they could potentially shape the choreography and performance. It was controlled or expected failure.

 

ON E-TEXTILES


What is interesting about e-textiles to us is their relationship to the body. These are materials that you can wear and move in, but also materials can sense you and influence you. They can read the body from the inside out and produce data. They can actuate on the body to change you from the outside in and affect how you think and move with your body.


The world is interested in e-textiles for many reasons. Convenience, portability, efficiency, connectivity are all part of the wearables landscape. But the importance of the body, ethics and sustainability need to become more to the forefront of e-textiles as we are putting our bodies and our privacy on the line to achieve these goals.


E-textiles and sustainability need to be considered as we move forward with wearables. Where do our materials come from? Can they be recycled after use? More importance to how circular design and other approaches may develop e-textiles and wearables would help create a greener tech industry.

YOUR FAILED PROJECT:

Describe the context (art/design/academia/other) of your project
“USA burning flags” consists (for now) in a hand-made flag on cloth. However, this is an art installation, as the flag is exposed as an object taken from its historical and geographical context. “USA burning flags” is a work in progress. To date, the work consists of a single flag and a series of contacts with various associations and people in different countries especially in Middle East area (but not only).

Was there a specific framework for your project? Was it aimed to a specific call, exhibition or other defined frame? If yes, what kind?
“USA burning flags” is a personal project. This flag, in particular, was made in Pakistan to be burned during a protest, and it’s the result of almost 2 years of work and difficult negotiations that has involved public and private, local and international institutions and private citizens.

What was the motivation for your project?
The project is linked to the events that in recent years are affecting the Mediterranean and Middle East countries. Events that bring with them and describes the brutality of some political/economic decisions and the logic of power/profit that regulate it.

Give a short description of your project
Many of the handmade USA flags made to be burnt during protests have errors that completely distort the organization of the flag. The error, in this case, represents a series of failures and brings into play the whole collective imagination around this symbol. Gesture, that of giving the flames, nowadays even more valuable, in a historic moment in which the worldwide identity seems to be redefined day by day, leaving room for uncertainty. This flag is made in Pakistan.

How did the project fail?
technical failure

Describe how you failed, the reason you think you failed, what you have learned and what you would do differently from today’s perspective.
Personally, it is a failure because in almost 2 years of work I have just received a flag. However, the errors in making those flags can be read as a success, such as the ability to show a series of misunderstandings and failures.

What was the afterlife of the project?
The idea of the project was, and still is, to create a collection of flags from different parts of the world.

How did the failure affect your work and your progress?
Failure, in this case, becomes part of the job. Failure, that tells a number of difficulties that perhaps, better than the flag itself, show the difficulties around this issue.

 

ON E-TEXTILES

What make e-textiles an interesting subject that matters to you?
In this case, it is not an e-textiles, however this fabric/flag is interesting to me because it tells also about the difficulty in accessing a number of technological structures in certain countries (i.e. control the design of the flag during its construction).

What make e-textiles interesting to the world as such?
The possibility of incorporating technology, not a body extension (e.g. phone, watch, …), but part of the body itself.

Which aspects should be given more importance in the future developments of e-textiles products and services?
Perhaps one of the most important functions of the e-textiles is the ability to monitor vital functions, however the ability to continuously program and update these textiles device makes them particularly versatile and interesting.

After having obtained the San Pablo CEU University Audiovisuals and Communication Degree in 2008, I started working on movie criticism, cinema and communications, having experiences both for the public and the private sector. I have worked for the written and the audiovisual press, elaborated scripts and made some short movies from 2008 to date.

 

YOUR FAILED PROJECT:


It was a short movie which shooting never was finished. The young hopes of the moment passed easily and the images where left in oblivion. Now I have gathered them and make and editing from what we can call the rests of the wreck.


Just the young hopes of some cinema lovers.


Doing something together as movie buffers. Nothing very professional.


The rest of an old footage has been recovered. It is the story of a murderer inside a normal guy. Also the story of some ghosts lost in time: presences and non-presences that remain attached to a space and a moment that vanish in memory.


other (describe) Lost of young hopes


Me and my friends love cinema, so we started to prepare a movie. The initial hopes ended up easily when we realised that making a movie is much more difficult than it seams. It takes your time and power. So I learnt that you have to transmit the love you feel for a project to the rest of the team, specially when things start to get wrong. In this sense, money helps. People care less about problems when they have incomes. So an amateur movie can be the most difficult thing to achieve in some ways


We made an awful edition and sent it to several short film festivals. Obviously, nobody was interested on it. After a year trying something in this way we understood that the result was not good enough to be shown in festivals.


I quit of making movies for 10 years. I made my second film when I was 28, when I was adult enough to fight those old fears.

 

ON E-TEXTILES


When I saw the rules I thought immediately on the special remix I had made of that old movie. I made the remix for love. A kind of work over nostalgia. I think that in a way, this project is perfect for this festival.


Everything needs another opportunity.

Describe the context (art/design/academia/other) of your project
The work is called an e-textile swatch and is made in the context of the e-textile summer camp, which is within the field of e-textiles. E-textiles develops interactive, new materials and explores “the future”, where technology invades the human surroundings. E-textiles extends to wearables and with the aspect of design it extends to Fashion. This swatch is a mix of art, design and electronics.

Was there a specific framework for your project? Was it aimed to a specific call, exhibition or other defined frame? If yes, what kind?
The work is made in the framework of the E-Textile Swatch Exchange, part of the E-textile Summer Camp. There is a call on internet. 25 Participants start with an idea and make 25 real copies. There is an exchange ritual. Each participant ends up with a book of 25 swatches, one of all participants. This means the exchange is meant as community building.

What was the motivation for your project?
Participating in the exchange ritual feels as magic. The magic of exchanging e-textiles ideas, which are real and not internet copies, likes, shares and digital friends. The ritual is the absolute opposite of our money driven society, as our ego driven normal life in this society. The magic probably is deeply rooted in for instance primitive exchange sacrifices. The second motivation is the joy of invention. The small size allows for enormous versatility and freshness of ideas and execution.

Give a short description of your project
Swatch 2017, 150 x 110 mm, Title: Inessential. With a rectangular piece of carbon non woven, a microcontroller ATtiny85, with two analog inputs and 4 LED’s a device can be made which indicates on which quadrangle of the carbon a droplet of water has been fallen. On each of the 25 swatches a different keyword from the text of Baudrillard (Le systeme des objets, 1978, pg 198, 199) on inessential personalisation features of industrial design are embroidered.

How did the project fail?

Describe how you failed, the reason you think you failed, what you have learned and what you would do differently from today’s perspective.
This swatch is a failure on the social level. The personalisation idea was caused by production. Why make 25 copies? Why not variations. Different keywords from the text of Baudrillard on “the inessential” (“The system of Objects”, 1978, p 198,199) embroidered on the items were meant to personalize the swatch. But these words only make the item “unique” – autonomous. Also the swatches were distributed randomly and still participants thought the word was meant personally for them.

What was the afterlife of the project?
After reading Baudrillard’s book “la société de consommation”, 1976, the failure of personalization was clear. The items are distributed in 25 swatch books. A procedure will be set up to ask the owners of the swatch books to destroy (recycle) the failed swatch “Inessential”. This raises the question of ownership. Then it could be envisioned that a new swatch is made, with a number of design variations. The participants can chose the variation which makes them “realize their true nature”.

How did the failure affect your work and your progress?
The acquired knowledge on personalisation made me realize that the only thing that counts is not invention, uniqueness or autonomy in the swatch but the social community of participants in this ritual. It doesn’t matter what the content of the swatch is, as long as it asks for a sacrifice of the hard labor of the production of 25 copies, which is then exchanged between the small community of the participants in this ritual.

What make e-textiles an interesting subject that matters to you?
For me personally e-textiles reconciles different aspects of my interests, drives and obsessions. The textiles being soft and a manifold. The programming and circuitry is logic, functioning. The making means using my hands, not only thinking or trying to be intelligent. The design aspect makes it visual, not only a concept. And being worn, it means it becomes human, not only utopian. It can even fail.

What make e-textiles interesting to the world as such?
E-textiles is a combination of technology and the real. Technology has developed social media, which was promising but has driven us apart. Failure. Nobody to blame, this was unforeseen. With this experience – try again. E-textiles is a medium for technology. A fresh way to reconcile technology with being human. Combining fabrics, soft, flexible, stretchable with hard electronics and programming could bring technological possibilities more in touch with a human way of being human.

Which aspects should be given more importance in the future developments of e-textiles products and services?
More Community building, Developing weird strategies. Not confirming to economical pressure and becoming yet another start-up. Reading. Studying social theory more than financial theory. Ignoring social media. Going for a balance with the real and forgetting about the virtual. This all means that e-textilers should realize their exceptional purpose. Saving the world and the Universe from dictators, politicians, corruption, but also from your own ego problem.

YOUR FAILED PROJECT


It is defined under the context of art but I have been inserting in certain design methodologies to order ideas
They are collages that interpret the extension of the I and of the speech by means of the sonorous and visual inserted in the body, on the body: the most visible part of the I with the speech.

MY project consists of pieces of clothing, most of them hacked out of their usual usability and altered in their structure to implement it from a technological layer that until now is sound> the body that speaks from a Reactive Skin. They are 3 pieces very decorated and baroque> hat, shirt and chest.

The experimentation comes well but you have to finish the projects and direct them to a research.


To research more, to learn more of programming, to consolidate my platform, to apply to funds to realize Festival 2018, to wait for learning and to generate contacts.


For good: I will enter a magister to install this subject within the art, to decide to obtain a greater clarity of planning of projects, to know to continue with the experimentation but directing all this to solid creation.

 

ON E-TEXTILES


Being a medium I exchange exchange to investigate, the magic of the technology and how this can be a favor to raise the conscience of the man of himself and surroundings, to humanize more the world.
